"The decision by the Immigration Minister to allow Dr Haneef to live in residential detention, while compelling him to report to Authorities on a daily base is a shocking failure on the part of the Minister to discern between presumed guilt and presumed innocence," WA Rights group Project SafeCom said this afternoon.

"It must be clear now to everyone that Dr Haneef does not have a case to answer. The fact that the minister has started this afternoon on a period of his own "staged withdrawal" makes a mockery even of the Migration Act," spokesman Jack H Smit said.

"The Haneef Immigration case looks to the entire world, where everyone is watching the bungle of Australian authorities, like a blunt case of stubbornness 'because the Minister can', and it seems solely designed to save the Minister's skin and the government's face."

"Dr Haneef needs to be immediately released and be returned to his honourable status of a working resident of our nation."
