"WA refugee lobby group Project SafeCom has welcomed Dick Smith's announcement on the ABC's 'Sunday Morning with Macca' program that he will visit the Baxter detention centre this week, in particular to visit long-term detainee Peter Qasim."

"Dick Smith's announcement of the visit is yet another example of Australians who normally would not have involved themselves in these issues, but who have come to the point where they are so dismayed with Australia's bankrupt immigration detention system, where we lock up decent and innocent people who have committed no crime, for life, that they take steps, engage themselves and 'vote with their feet'."

"While Dick Smith's commitment to visit Mr Qasim is a private visit, the fact that he announced this on a national radio program, and that he called on Australians to write to Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone about Mr Qasim, should be noted as an expression of the urgency Mr Qasim represents. Mr Qasim's deplorable situation needs to end, and it needs to end right now; but not only that, the horrors of what we do to asylum seekers, enshrined in the Migration Act, need to be undone for good, and the 'crimes against humanity impunity provisions' that politicians knowingly crafted in this Act, need to be repealed."
