"The 'Howard Lite' pollution reduction targets as announced by the Rudd government earlier this week have one aspect built into them that's beyond any doubt, and that is that there's not more than a five per cent chance that anyone in their right mind who is comprehensively informed about climate change issues and concerned about global warming, will give their vote to Kevin Rudd and Penny Wong's Labor at the next Federal election," WA Human Rights group Project SafeCom said this morning.

Project SafeCom is one of more than sixty Community Groups, NGO's and Alliances that signed on to the statement "Carbon scheme a recipe for disaster" as initiated by Friends of The Earth, and listed on its website here:

"The audacity of Kevin Rudd and Penny Wong to walk away from their 2007 election promises as well as target recommendations indicated by the world's best scientists, while handing out billions of dollars in free carbon permits to Australia's polluters and while setting a target that sacrifices the Great Barrier Reef, Ningaloo Reef, and Coastal habitats in Western Australia in a context of a dying Murray Darling river system, certifies Federal Labor as an 'Old Solutions Party', massively sponsoring old style and polluting energy companies while giving just a bit more than a drip feed to Australia's highly feasible sustainable power and products industry," spokesman Jack H Smit said.

"If that means that a fast growing number of concerned Australians abandon Labor at the next election, to be announced in a little more than 18 months, and give their vote to parties and MP's who want to keep in line with best practice targets, policies and strategies, such as the Australian Greens, then this should be Australia's New Climate Change voter deal, and Kevin Rudd will have to learn the hard way and see more Greens Senators appear as a result of that election, and see several "hardline Rudd-muted climate change denialists" in the Labor party kicked out of their seats."
