"While the rest of Australia is preparing for World Refugee Week this month, Tony Abbott is ensuring that the racist scum in the Liberal Party floats to the top, after this morning's baiting of the Immigration Department and the Gillard government over undocumented asylum seekers," WA Human Rights group Project SafeCom said this afternoon.

"Not only are the statements about asylum seekers without documents a foul dog whistle aimed at the uninformed racists in certain electorates who applauded John Howard, the comments from Mathias Cormann, Scott Morrison and Tony Abbott are evidence they would fail their "Refugee Worker 101" exam if UNHCR would offer them to sit for the exam," spokesman Jack H Smit said.

"Instead of opening their mouths and throwing away the proof they don't have the dignity that comes with the status of being in government, Abbott, Morrison and Cormann should join their politically like-minded colleagues Peter Reith and Angry Anderson, who will be part of the second series of "Go Back to Where You Came From"."

"It's highly likely that the ABC was thrown some opportunistic bait about Captain Emos - when it was claimed he arrived on a boat and with a passport. Any asylum seeker who has a passport will come to Australia on an aircraft. The most obvious truism of maritime asylum seekers is that this is their only option because they are unable to fly to Australia on regular airline flights."

"Mathias Cormann, Scott Morrison and Tony Abbott are beginning to show their true colours, and they are a disgrace to notions of governance in Australia as a responsible nation in a globalised world," Mr Smit concluded.
